Topical solutions like Duofilm and Occlusal, made from salicylic and/or lactic acids, can be applied to the wart one to three times a day. To start soak the wart with water for 10 minutes to soften it, then by decreasing the wart down so that the medicine can be better absorbed. Apply the acid carefully, protecting the normal the healthy around the wart skin, which can quickly become irritated. Acid-containing plasterslike as TransPlantar or Trans-VerSal may be easier to use, as you apply them nightly and leave them on for 24 hours.
Oral cimetidine (Tagamet), has been found to kill viruses that cause warts and to boost the immune system. Oral cimetidine has been helpful in over two-thirds of cases, eliminating warts within three months. It is usually most helpful in children. The cost can be prohibitively high, though.
Carbon dioxide laser treatments to remove warts are one of the newer therapies.
Dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB) is a chemical that can be placed over warts.
Large, resistant warts could be injected with the cancer treating medication bleomycin (Blenoxane). This is painful, but is also usually quite useful.
Tretinoin (Retin-A) gel, applied topically, is often used for flat warts . Another topical medication, fluorouracil (Efudex, Fluoroplex) lotion, may also be used for flat facial warts.
Imiquimod (Aldara) cream is an immune-response modifier that is very helpful for external genital warts. It is put over the warts at bedtime 3 times per week, and washed off six to ten hours later, on arising. It can be used for 16 weeks, with results in four weeks. As with topical antiviral techniques, common side effects such as, skin redness, flaking, swelling, itching, and burning.
A podophyllum lotion (Podocon-25, Podofin) may be used to genital warts by a dermatologist. It is then washed off at home by the patient to get rid of warts six to 12 hours later. It is a powerful irritant, but, it must be cleaned off quickly if the skin treated becomes tender, inflamed, or very itchy.
Podofilox (Condylox) is a newer remedy, like however not as strong as podophyllum. It can be used at home to get rid of warts.
Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) is many times used for treating all types of warts.
